1) What pump up song plays in your head when you take the track? Til’ I Collapse by Eminem – The beat is just energizing the the Chorus of the song gives me an extra little edge mentally! There are a few others, but that is my song to put me in the zone 2) What is your favorite city to travel to play derby in? I have been pretty blessed with the different teams I have played with over the years.. I would say Playing with Team USA in Birmingham was pretty amazing… The crowd had so much energy.. I remember being on the track when The opposing team scored the first point on us and I could barely here myself think none the less talk to my teammates.. That weekend was the most mind blowing weekend of my derby career to date!! 3) Who is your favorite WFTDA skater and why? My favorite skater in the WFTDA… Wow… I look up to and respect many of them.. I think the first name that comes to mind.. Acker’s.. She is such a driving motion with her team on the track (which i have experienced 2x now with Your Mom) and s\pushes herself to be an amazing leader. Seeing her Captain Team USA this last year when I was working the Roller Derby Elite both was pretty awesome.. Maybe its her twerking.. I dont know.. lol.. J 4) When the team travels, which team mate(s) do you room with? Ahh… I have stayed with pretty much about any of them.. Being a satellite skater anytime I’m with the team I need a place to stay…. The team has opened there homes for me and I couldn’t be more blessed to have them. Most often I spend my time with A muse or open my room for a teammate to stay with me… 5) Which MRDA skater pushes you to be better [because they’ve beaten you in the past]? They may sound weird for those that don’t know my past, but the 3 Muse brothers. Back in 2011 when I played with the Green Bay Smackers we played Your Mom at a tournament.. The Muse Brothers and the rest of Your Mom has pushed me to the point I am at now.. I have really been super blessed with this opportunity that came to me. 6) What is your favorite post-bout food? BEER… nah, just kidding.. not a beer drinker even tho I live in Wisconsin… I rarely eat after a game.. My adrenaline levels are so high that I have a very low appetite. Its normally several hours after a game before I eat and then its pretty much whatever is close
1) What pump up song plays in your head when you take the track? (My song would have to be Jammin by Black Violin. Back when I jamskated that song always got me pumped up and when I skated for MCM that was are skate out song)
2) What is your favorite city to travel to play derby in? (Besides the DFW area I would have to say St. Louis. They have awesome fans and I love the venue.)
3) Who is your favorite WFTDA skater and why? (I really enjoy skating against my wife (Hannah Barbaric). She is able to adapt to my skating since we always skate together. I would also have to say Smarty Pants. She is a class act. I always enjoy sharing the track with her.)
4) When the team travels, which team mate(s) do you room with? (I try to room with anyone who doesn’t snore. I HATE snoring. My roomies are usually Haterade, GI Joel and HimQlez. Good group of guy’s. )
5) Which MRDA skater pushes you to be better [because they’ve beaten you in the past]? (The two guy’s I like skating against are my old teammates Jeremy Strecker and Chuck Best. I have grown up with both of them and they always push me to skate my hardest against them.)
6) What is your favorite post-bout food? (Mexican or Firehouse Subs are my go to’s.)
Your Mom is known for speed skating agility and edgework; they use their momentum to get through packs and around blockers. They use their momentum to put other blockers on the floor. They have some bruisers like Becker and Jack Hammer’d, and they have strategists like Seahorses Forever and Sugar Boots. They have impossible to catch jammers in Rollomite and Frank NotsoHotra.

Texas is like their up-and-coming little brother. They have a lot of experience of high level play in TJ Binkley and GI Joel. All of their jammers jump apexes and out-juke opponents (you’ll rarely see The Enabler or Dr. Feelgood with all 8 on the ground). Their recycling yesterday against Puget was on point.
This is going to like the Puget/Your Mom game of Maritime Mayhem, which was called one of the best games of the year. This game gets rolling at 11a CST on WFTDA.tv

Hollywood Chuck Hendrick #247; Puget Sound Outcast Derby (5)
1) What pump up song plays in your head when you take the track? The song that makes pumps me up is Empire State of mind by jay-z
2) What is your favorite city to travel to play derby in? My favorite city to play derby in besides Seattle of course is anywhere that has a crowd watching. I love playing in front of lots of people.
3) Who is your favorite WFTDA skater and why? My favorite WFTDA skater is snot rocket science, she is so amazing on and off the floor and such a student of the game. Mostly it’s because she enjoys playing derby and you can see that when she skates. Lol
4) When the team travels, which team mate(s) do you room with? I usually always am with Cory pain, ryrod never a dull moment there.
5) Which MRDA skater pushes you to be better [because they’ve beaten you in the past]? Cory Pain pushes me the most out of any skater mostly cause he knows what I can do on the track and he won’t take anything less than the best from me. We have skated together for over 20 years, he is only player in derby I’m afraid of.
6) What is your favorite post-bout food? Post bout food is easy for me MEAT!! Love me a steak and some shrimp after bouts. My team has come so far this year and I’m really excited to see what we have at champs!! Thanks for all you do;)

3) Who is your favorite WFTDA skater and why? It would Lauren Mutch. Her skating ability and style is what is what I admire and I try copy it.
4) When the team travels, which team mate(s) do you room with? I always room with Uncle Jesse Mcnasty, Rhino and Big O. It’s never a dual moment in that room.
5) Which MRDA skater pushes you to be better [because they’ve beaten you in the past]? It would definitely be Shango Fett from gatekeepers. I’ve played against him for so many years. I’ve made a little rivalry and of it but he might not know it lol
6) What is your favorite post-bout food? It would have to be gummy snacks. I love raiding the snack table at tournaments
These two met each other at Midwest BrewHaha, and Puget has to be itching to correct the mistakes of the last game. Texas has been destroying the competition this year, which most of us expected when the merger of Denton County and Dallas Deception was announced. Puget is as dominant as ever, and though they lost to the Outlaws before, they have all the tools to win in this very close match-up.

Texas and Puget have very similar styles of play: they utilize a looser pack positioning when in motion, and ‘fish’ for jammers ng capability of individual blockers to give the pack a moment to congeal around jammers. Meanwhile, both teams have jammer pools mixed with agility, airtime, and the strength that have had a lot of practice pushing a grinding hypercube this season. Both teams play fast, both teams are hoppy. Both teams are also chasing the dream of ending up on the dais with hardware around their neck.

It’s almost here: The 2014 MRDA Championships. This week, skaters, officials, announcers, and fans will descend Tacoma, Washington for Maritime Mayhem, hosted by Puget Sound Outcast Derby. I figured that I should do a preview of the teams, like last year, to get us all amped up about the tournament. Coming in as the Eighth Seed is a new team (to the MRDA and the tournament): The Denton County Outlaws.
Fun fact: Denton County is debuting in the Top 8. A feat not easy now that there are so many member leagues. BOOM. Nice work, fellas.
I got to watch DCO play at Spring Roll this season. Truth be told, most of us watched their bouts because they (as well as the Cincinnatti Battering Rams and Southern Discomfort) were giant wild cards in the MRDA at that point. Most of us fans had not seen any of the teams play and we were curious at the showing they would make. Denton was of particular interest, since many of us had watched some of their vets play on Dallas Deception, Magic City Misfits, and Team USA previously.
DCO definitely came out swinging. They played the Carolina Wreckingballs (ranked 16th at that time) first. They came out with a definitive strength and speed that the Balls just couldn’t handle. Game 2 of Spring Roll brought them against a different kind of Wreckingball: the lads from London, Southern Discomfort.
Side Note: After the game against the Carolina Wreckingballs, the lady fans of the Balls decided that Denton won the “Team Sexy” award for 2014. “Bout Sexy” of Spring Roll went to the Denton County Outlaws v Southern Discomfort. (For those who have been reading my writing, you may recall that 2013’s SR winner was Bridgetown Menace v Mass Maelstrom.)

So Disco was able to [mostly] capture the jukes and ducks of DCO jammers (it was a blast watching Haterade give them a hard time though). The walls of Denton blockers just didn’t have the same experience as their competition, but it was a phenomenal bout. DCO only lost by 99 points (super impressive considering So Disco had lost to #4 Mass Maelstrom by only 53 points the night before). DCO rounded out their Spring Roll with a definitive win against the Canadian powerhouses on the Mont Royals.

The Outlaws have only been together since March of 2012. They skate out of the House of Quad (just north of Dallas), and get to share the space with North Texas Derby Revolution and the Rolling Rebellions, a junior league. While they have picked up vet skaters, newbies to derby like Keith Rucker are making their mark on DCO. Vet TJ Binkley says:
“Keith is our under-rated jammer. He is a rink rat but fairly new to derby. [He] has some moves …that he shouldn’t be able to. The guy is fearless.”
When mid-season rankings came out, DCO was still unranked, since they had not played their 5 sanctioned MRDA bouts. The world of men’s derby (ok, maybe just me and a few other people who are rankings nerds) were waiting with baited breath to see how DCO did at the Arizona Rattleskates’ Southwest Sausage Fest.

Why?
Well let’s talk rankings for a second. In the WFTDA there is a fancy new equation that helps the organization calculate rankings. In the MRDA they’re still doing things a little old school. So the member teams vote. That being said, if a team has established wins that calculate out properly, they tend to move upward. Here’s what we need to look at:
Southern Discomfort played 3 of the 4 top teams in the MRDA and lost to them, but … only lost to Maelstrom by 50 points (almost a tie in derby standards). Denton lost to So Disco by 99 points. DCO was slated to play Deep Valley Belligerents at SW Sausagefest. DVB was ranked #8 at mid-terms. Right. So if DCO could beat DVB, that would mean that they were better than the #8 ranking and since So Disco had beaten DCO by a larger margin, it would mean they were at least better than at least the 8 seed. (Ok, so maybe me and So Disco were waiting with baited breath for Sausagefest).

The walls of DCO had strengthened since I watched them play at Spring Roll (through the magic of the interwebs, I got to watch the stream of Sausagefest). The walls were more fluid and worked as a unit to contain, play offense as they were playing defense (yay!), and kill penalties. Deep Valley simply couldn’t contain the DCO jammers. I wish I could give you stats on this one, but it seems that the stats package hasn’t been uploaded to FTS. Womp Womp. I will say that I particularly enjoy watching Lucky Charmer magically break through packs and Phillip Stout working with his team mates to destroy opponents.

So let’s talk Champs. Denton is facing off in the first round against Your Mom Men’s Roller Derby. To say they’re the underdog is a bit of an understatement. Especially since one of their primary jammers, aforementioned Haterade, is out recovering from surgery. Binkley says the guys aren’t looking at their underdog status as a negative stance though:
“Our main goal is to have fun and learn from each game. We just want to the rest of MRDA that we belong here. Whatever place we finish in at the end of the tournament accomplishment since this is our first time being ranked. I know the DCO guys will soak everything in and come out of this tournament that much stronger. [Denton County is] extremely excited to be a part of the years champs. It’s every team’s goal to make it to champs. I’m just happy to see our goal come to life!”
Regardless of how this weekend turns out for Denton, you can be sure they are going to come out with fast feet, spins, hops, and powerful blocking.

They are a ‘super team’ of flat track women and men from the East Coast who are coming together to play the Penn Jersey Hooligans on the bank track on Saturday, September 28. Check out more information about the double header on FACEBOOK or on the flyer at the bottom of the article. The Outlaws face off against the Hooligans at 3:30p and then the PA All Stars take the track against the She Devils afterwards.
For fans of Team Rogue, you’ll see some familiar skaters on the roster when you come to the event. The Outlaws came together to take Rogue’s place in the double header action, and fans will not be disappointed with the power houses taking the track. So who are the members of the East Coast Outlaws?
Raven Darkhold (River City Rollergirls)
Raven is a monster blocker and a fearsome jammer on the flat track. As a member of Team Rogue, Raven was a critical blocker in the back of the pack for controlling jammers throughout the Derby Ink tournament.
Buster Skull (Salisbury Rollergirls)
If you don’t have a derby crush on Buster now, you will by the end of the game. She won the hearts of Derby Ink when she wore the Rogue yellow & green for her quick feet and her ability to smash up opposing players. She is small, but she is mighty.
Bam Bam Brawler (Charlottesville Derby Dames)
On the flat track, she is magnetically repelled by the lines (just try and pull a cut track on her). On the bank track, she is a leader and a powerhouse. A key Team Rogue pivot, Bam Bam used her experience to help Rogue control and pick apart teams they faced. (And she even got to use those quick feet to score some points)
Merry Khaos (Dutchland Derby Rollers)
Utility is the name of the game for Khaos on the bank track. Fans know her to hold the star during flat track games, using footwork and spins. On Team Rogue she got to show off her booty blocking and lateral control, taking some of the strongest skaters to the rail, or off the track.
Pearl Jammer (CT Rollergirls)
This photo is just magic.
Some believe she is made of solid granite. Pearl’s jamming is no joke and her blocking is some of the fiercest you’ll see. She is a true weapon of the Outlaws. This will be her first time on a bank track, or playing MADE rules, but that won’t hold her back.
Hits Happen (CT Death Quads)
I couldn’t find an action shot of him skating forward so you get his head shot.
MRDA teams don’t like seeing Hits in the blocker rotation. He is notorious for blinding hits and never giving up on the jammer. He is a solid piece of any Death Quad front wall. This will be his first time on the bank track, we’ll see how he adjusts to skating FORWARDS for the entire bout!
Frightmare (DC Rollergirls)
Persistent, wily and explosive are words often associated with this bank track first-timer. At DC she makes her mark with footwork and power. It will be awesome to see how she translates it to the bank track.
Dirty Frank (CT Death Quads)
A rookie even to MRDA, Dirty Frank has shown that he is no joke. He is strong and agile and is an important blocker for the Death Quads, having picked up on the speed change aspect of the game very well. His first time dealing with a bank track should be fun to see.
Hu Dat (Charlottesville Derby Dames)
Always a crowd favorite, Hu Dat is fearless with a jammer star. She has bursting speed and quick feet that belie her years in roller derby. Watch for Hu when blocking though, she can swing her hips better than seasoned vets. She is eager for her first bank track game.
Sharp Shredder (DC Rollergirls)
Another vet of the flat track, Shredder tears up the DC Armory with the jammer star and isn’t afraid to jump an apex or two. Beware her power hits when she’s blocking. She’ll take you right off of your skates. Like teammate, Frightmare, this will be Sharp’s first time climbing onto the bank track.
Starsky (Jersey Boys Roller Derby)
POWER. That’s what Starsky has to his advantage. As a member of the Vice Squad at Derby Ink, he was able to leave a mark on his opponents. At the Derby Q2’s All Star scrimmage, he was also able to speed by his opponents as jammer, impervious to their blows.
